Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
In 1812 werd Charles Dickens geboren in Portsmouth te Engeland. Hij was in zijn eigen tijd een van de belangrijkste schrijvers. Tot in de 20e eeuw bleef hij een zeer populaire schijver in Engeland. Veel van zijn bekende werken zijn verfilmd. Zijn meest beroemde romans zijn onder andere David Copperfield, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A tale of two cities. Dickens staat bekend om zijn uitvoerige en gedetailleerde beschrijvingen van personages en situaties, hierdoor verkrijgt het verhaal een zeer beeldend karakter en verplaats je je als lezer als het ware terug in de tijd. Ook is zijn werk humoristisch en sociaal betrokken, waardoor hij een groot publiek voor zich wist te winnen.
